Mark Zuckerberg stated in a communication to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Monday that his company was urged by the White House in 2021 to restrict content related to COVID-19, including humor and satire.

“In 2021, senior members from the Biden White House, such as the White House, constantly urged our teams Hope Walz for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, such as satirical content, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg described that the pressure he felt in 2021 was “wrong” and he regrets that his company, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more vocal. He further stated Social Media Criticism that with the “benefit of hindsight and new information,” some decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“Like I told our teams back then, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration from either side â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this occurs in the future, ” Zuckerberg wrote.

stated in July 2021 that social media platforms are “killing people” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later walked back these remarks, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A spokesperson from the White House responded to Zuckerberg’s communication, stating the administration at the time was promoting “responsible measures to Support For People With Disabilities safeguard public health.”

“Our stance has been clear and consistent: we think tech companies and other private actors should consider the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the content they share, ” according to the spokesperson.

Zuckerberg also mentioned in the letter that the FBI warned his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and Burisma affecting the Fox News 2020 election.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team reduced the visibility of a New York Post report alleging Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could review the report.

Zuckerberg said that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we should not have reduced its visibility.”

Meta has since updated its policies and procedures to “ensure this does Acceptance Speech not recur” and will no longer demote content in the US while waiting for fact-checkers.

In the letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will not repeat actions he took in the year 2020 when he assisted “electoral infrastructure.”

“The goal here was to make sure local election jurisdictions across the country had the resources they needed to facilitate safe voting during a pandemic,” Tim Walz said the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were designed to be nonpartisan but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg said his aim is to be “impartial” so will not be “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP members on the House Judiciary Committee shared the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Biden-Harris administration pressured Ann Coulter Facebook to censor Americans, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long been under scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who have accused Facebook and other large technology platforms of being prejudiced against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has stressed that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the perception has gained a firm foothold in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically scrutinized Parent-child Relationship Facebook’s decision to limit the circulation of a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in the past years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media company and regulators to little effect.

In a 2020 Senate session, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s employees are liberal. But he maintained that the company ensures political bias does Trolls On Social Media not influence its decisions.
